Anthony Grafton, History, Princeton University
Anthony Grafton is Dodge Professor of History at Princeton University. His work focuses primarily on the cultural history of Renaissance Europe, the history of books and readers, scholarship and education in the West from Antiquity to the 19th century, and the history of science from Antiquity to the Renaissance. His books include Forgers and Critics: Creativity and Duplicity in Western Scholarship; The Footnote: A Curious History; and Bring Out Your Dead: The Past as Revelation. Professor Grafton has also written intellectual biographies of Leon Battista Alberti, Girolamo Cardano and Joseph Scaliger. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the Balzan Prize for History of the Humanities, and the Mellon Foundation’s Distinguished Achievement Award.
