Marjorie Burge examines the adoption of Chinese writing in Korea and Japan through the study of inscribed wooden tablets from the 6th through 8th centuries CE. Exploring how script transitioned from a documentary technology to use in more creative capacities, she devotes attention to connections between evolving written cultures on the peninsula and the archipelago.
