Professor of Music Myra Melford is a pianist and composer specializing in contemporary improvised music. Her latest project, Language of Dreams, premiered in November 2013 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. Incorporating music, movement, video, and spoken text, her work puts into conversation diverse perspectives on and histories of the Americas.

Inspired by Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano's Memory Of Fire trilogy, which explores the history of the Americas through the retelling of indigenous myths and accounts from the European colonizers, Melford’s Language of Dreams features a book of original pieces that draw on a variety of cultural and musical traditions of the Americas. The work features Melford’s quintet Snowy Egret, Spanish and English narration by vocalist, Sofia Rei, dancer/choreographer Oguri, and video imagery by artist David Szlasa.
